Fifth grade students of Douglass Academy pose for a picture alongside their teacher Ms. Hunt and Headmaster Ms. Chaney after reciting speeches on the life of Frederick Douglass. Douglass Academy, the tuition-free K-5 charter school at 6th & Red Cross Sts., proudly honors the great work of Frederick Douglass each year on Feb. 14, his observed birthday.

Nikki Chaney, Headmaster of Douglass Academy, commented, “Frederick Douglass is more than the namesake of our school; he is an example all students can look to for inspiration. As the great man said, ‘Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.’”

Douglass Academy is one of four public charter schools managed by The Roger Bacon Academy, Inc. founded in 1999 by education pioneer Baker Mitchell. The other schools include Charter Day School in Leland, Columbus Charter School in Whiteville, and South Brunswick Charter School in Southport with a combined enrollment of over 2,100 students in K-8. All four are tuition-free, charter schools that welcome all students, regardless of income, ability, or address. To learn more or enroll online, please visit
