Kelina Gause-Fogle, 1st Grade, answers a poster that asks “Education is important because…” during celebrations marking the 200th birthday of Frederick Douglass. The day-long event was organized and held at Douglass Academy, the tuition-free K-5 public school at 6th & Red Cross Streets. The day’s events included specialized lessons, inspirational posters, 5th graders reading self-penned paragraphs on Frederick Douglass to the rest of the school, a school-wide rendition of the song “happy birthday”, and a lot of smiles with cupcakes.
